St. Angelo fort in Kannur

St. Angelo Fort is also famous as Kannur Fort or Kannur Kotta. Kannur is a city of Kerala state , South india. Just 3km away from this Kannur city near Arabian sea, St. Angelo fort is located. Dom Francisco de Almeida was the first Portuguese viceroy of India. Originally he built St. Angelo fort in 1505. local Indian ruler Zamorin and kolathiri attacked on this fort in 1507.

 
In 1509, Afonso de Albuquerque wanted to supersede himself from the post of Portuguese Governor. Almeida refused it and arrested him in this frort. He was released after six moth's custody. He became new governor in october 1509. In 1663, Dutch captured the fort from Portuguese and modernized the fort. The bastions Hollandia, Zeelandia and Frieslandia, are the major features of the present structure of St. Angelo Fort. This features were built by Dutch. In 1772, King Ali raja of Arrakal bought this fort from the Dutch. In 1790, Britishers seized this fort and used it as their chief military station in Malabar until 1947. 

 
Nowadays,  Angelo fort is a protected monument under Archeological survey of India. fascinating view of the Moppila Bay and Dharmadom Island is being offered by St. Angelo Fort. Dharmadom Island has only 5 acres area just 100 m away from the mainland in Arabian sea and Mophila bay is a natural fishing bay.
